My good friend Robert Prince spoke to me the other day, he’s reading this book called Ishamel, I’ve heard the name before. ”Will, I’ve just started this book, but you need to read it when I’m done. I’ll have it for you in a couple days.”
As promised Robert passed me the book after we caught up over a 6 pack of beers and unloaded our new found knowledge and perspectives on our world…sorry I mean the world, it’s not ours. Robert dropped me off at the skytrain and I cracked the first page open. These are the only words which appear on page 1.
“The first time I read the ad, I choked and cursed and spat and threw the paper to the floor. Since even this didn’t seem to be quite enough, I snatched it up, marched into the kitchen, and shoved it into the trash. while I was there, I made myself a little breakfast and gave myself some time to cool down. I ate and thought about something else entirely. That’s right.”
What is this this ad that has caused so much emotion in our protagonist?
Teacher Seeks Pupil
Must Have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person.
The teacher, a recluse gorilla seems to hold the answers to one of the most elusive answers which has plagued civilization since its inception. I have read a quarter way into this book and it has climbed to my short-list in must reads for everybody. This book fundamentally challenges the way we think about a lot of things and I can’t wait to read and gain new perspectives to see through.
I will be following this quick introduction on Ishmael by addressing and reflecting on every main thought within the book.
Have you read this book? If so, what do you remember most about its message?
